Cobra the Cocktail Cabinet
Cobra, or Cathy as she was known at the time, lived on a houseboat on the Oxford Canal. There was no way she could have known that this unremarkable day was to be her last. Life was all cats and folk florals. Potted geraniums scented the creaking boat as the rise and fall of the waves gently bumped it against the side of the canal. Cathy stood, paint peeling, in a little corner of the kitchenette, cluttered with mis-matched cups and saucers, an old tea towel hooked to her cabinet knobs. One cat was curled next to her on the bench, and at her feet sat a basket in which her owner kept beads and wool skeins collected from her favorite store - the one with the Himalayan shirts, incense sticks and wooden carvings of Ganesha. It was on a quiet day like this that silently, swaying with the boat, a tiny cobra snake made it’s way out of a bag of Indian beads. It had stowed away in the packaging and travelled from the rainforests thousands of miles away. At just that moment, a teenager on an illegal jetski, zoomed past the boat. The wake was sudden and high. The boat tipped, crockery clattered and the snake, in a moment of panic, sunk its fangs into Cathy’s long legs. The venom utterly transformed our quiet unassuming Cathy into how we see her today. Her cabinet glows with mottled gold leaf, her exterior is now sleek in white and she holds far more exotic and potent elixirs than the herbal teas of her Oxfordshire days. I bring you, Cobra the Cocktail Cabinet!
